“Creativity is a continual surprise.” — Ray Bradbury
Joyfully today I am as enthusiastic about my career as a both graphic artist & illustrator today as when I was fresh out of art school. No two days are alike, nor are any two projects or the clients who I collaborate with. Unique business challenges are presented daily that give rise to the creative process – the integration of analytical left-brain problem-solving with the more playful right-brain perspectives of seeing and experimenting.
In the first half of my career I was primarily working as a technical illustrator: initially at Harley-Davidson, then for AMC/Jeep, and later Ball Aerospace. I created isometric and diametric cutaways and exploded-views of things like: engines and transmissions, laser-communication devices, deep-space infrared telescopes, and fast-steering satellites for identifying and tracking intercontinental missiles. One of my career highlights was illustrating three concepts for the 9-foot bearings to rotate the solar panels on the future International Space Station.
With the emergence of CAD systems, the entire technical illustration industry was disrupted. Instead of hand-drawn blueprints, products were being designed in CAD systems where a 3D rendition was an added bonus. So I needed to reinvent myself to stay relevant.
I launched Lightspeed Commercial Arts in 1996. I focused primarily on logo design, extended visual branding, and print design. I’ve won over 30 national and international “Awards of Excellence” for Logo Design. Additionally, I’ve won various BEST OF CATEGORY design awards in the areas of: Typography/font design, Logo Usage Style Guide, Corporate Environmental Graphics, Consumer Packaging, Stationery, Book Cover, Photography, and Illustration.
Conceptual science illustration is another of my core strengths. For 10 years I’ve have an exclusive contract with the Univ. of CO – School of Advanced Engineering and Applied Science to create graphics for the university staff doing research in the areas of: nanotechnology, medical devices, aerospace, geotechnical, robotics, energy storage, and earthquakes studies. I also helped publish (artwork and file prep) three 800-pg university-level textbooks on Nanotechnology.
For pleasure, I create Fine Art airbrush watercolor paintings and enjoy nature photography. In 2019 I self-published my first book of my photographs called “Walking With Rumi”. It features 120 of my photos interwoven with the poetry of Rumi, the 13th century Sufi mystic poet. Active memberships include Boulder Open Studios, Boulder Art Association, and NoBo Arts District.
